Fisheries and aquaculture production and distribution systems are at the heart of the blue bio-economy. As the supplier of the world’s most traded protein, the seafood sector has a pivotal role to play in building and maintaining global supply and distribution systems that ensure the delivery of safe, sustainable, and equitable products and services into the second half of the 21st Century.
The WSC2023 will explore how to optimise the contribution of fishery and aquaculture production and distribution to sustainable development, reflecting the interests of operators, workers along the supply chain and, crucially, consumers.
The Congress will bring together the businesses and people working in the global seafood trade and its supply chain. It will consider how to optimise their contributions and how the sector can adapt to the challenging dynamics of the physical, biological, informational, and socio-economic environment to ensure that businesses deliver safe, sustainable, and equitable products and services into the second half of the 21st Century.

Dr. Essam Yassin Mohammed, Director General of WorldFish and Senior Director of Aquatic Food Systems at CGIAR will open the Congress, leading the debate with an overview of key issues and challenges in “Blue Harvest: Charting a Sustainable Course for People, Planet, and Profits”
Hon. Prof. Melanie Siggs, Advisor to the World Economic Forum’s ‘Friends of Ocean Action’ programme will talk on improving utilisation in “Aquatic food; eliminating waste, nutrient use and the circular economy”
Dr. Alison Turnbull, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania and Chair of SafeFish Australia, will set out emerging food safety challenges in “Managing evolving seafood safety risks in the changing global environment”
Dr.Ricardo Calado, Principal Researcher at Department of Biology, University of Aveiro, Portugal will consider advances in the science of traceability in “Tracing the geographic origin of bivalves – for value, safety and conservation”
Paolo Caricato, from Directorate G5 - Food Hygiene, Feed and Fraud, of DG for Health and Food Safety of the European Commission, will consider the question: “EU sanitary rules for fishery products and bivalve molluscs. It is time to change?”
Tracy Murai, Assistant Director, Global Fisheries and Marine, Thai Union Group, will address ethical conditions and human rights in “Work and Welfare in The Global Seafood Trade”.
​Prof. Ana Gago-Martinez, Head of the Analytical Chemistry and Food Department of the University of Vigo (and former Director of the EU Reference Laboratory for the control of Marine Biotoxins), will discuss the latest findings from EU funded research on “Risk characterization of Ciguatera Poisoning in Europe within EUROCIGUA projects: The Analytical perspective”
Francisco Saraiva Gomes currently Founding Partner and CIO of Ocean 14 Capital. Francisco has over 23 years of operational and investment experience in aquaculture having managed operations in farming, health & nutrition, equipment & engineering, processing & marketing. During his career, Francisco has successfully advised and or led M&A for more than $300 M acquisition in fish farming, feeds, ingredients and equipment.
Esther Garrido Gamarro, FAO expert on food safety of fishery products, will present the recent work published by FAO on “Microplastics in food commodities: a food safety review on human exposure through dietary sources”
Dr. Steve Jones, Research Associate Professor of Natural Resources and Marine Science at the University of New Hampshire, will address the microbiological challenges in “Evolution and management of vibrio parahaemolyticus populations in the northeast USA”
Jogeir Toppe, Fisheries Officer with FAO Headquarters in Rome, responsible for managing post-harvest fisheries cooperation projects in developing countries, will present on his experiences in product and market development using “Bivalves, An Exceptional Source of Nutrients”.
Sirilak Suwanrangsi, Global Regulatory Leader for the Thai Union Group, responsible for ensuring compliance in international markets will present her industry and competent authority experiences of “Regulatory Challenges in Seafood Innovation”.
Laurice Churchill, Senior Consumer Safety Officer from the Seafood Inspection Program of NOAA under the U.S. Department of Commerce, will reflect on experiences with the expanded marine biotoxin management control strategies in “National Shellfish Sanitation Program Five Marine Biotoxin Strategies, Challenges for Offshore Bivalve Molluscan Shellfish Harvest”
Filipa Gomes is a Post-doctoral researcher at CETMARES – Research and Development Centre at MARE-IPLeiria in Peniche, where she specialises in utilisation of macroalgae. She will report on “Impact of Growth Medium on the Nutritional Quality of Seaweeds”.
Monika Dhanji-Rapkova works in the Food Safety group at CEFAS (UK), specialising in the analysis of marine biotoxins in seafood. She has recently completed her inter-disciplinary PhD project and will report her work on “Investigating Origin and Distribution Of Tetrodotoxin In British Bivalve Shellfish And Its Impact On Food Safety”
Valeska Weymann, Senior Expert for Aquaculture at GLOBALG.A.P. and responsible the management of standards for Good Agricultural Practices for the aquaculture sector, will address a “Holistic Approach Towards Safe and Sustainable Aquaculture Supply Chain”

Peter Howgate Award
Grant funding for attendance of young fish technologists at the
World Seafood Congress 2023
The International Association of Fish Inspectors (IAFI) is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the 2023 Peter Howgate Award. This award will fund the attendance of a young fish technologist (under 30 years of age) to the World Seafood Congress 2023, to be held in Peniche, Portugal from 25-27th September 2023.
The Award will cover travel, accommodation and the congress fee, and this will afford the winning applicant a career changing opportunity to gain insights and build networks in the global fishery sector. The deadline for submission of applications ended in May and we are now evaluating the award winners.

Accommodation
Peniche is well served with a wide range of hotels of different standards and prices, as well as guest houses, AirBNB etc. Peniche is also accessible from adjacent locations such as Consolação and Baleal.

How to get to Peniche
Peniche is about 1 hour by road from Lisbon airport. There are two main options for transport from Lisbon Airport to Peniche – bus or private transport
Public transport
Two bus lines serve Peniche, Rede Expressos (from Sete Rios Bus station) and Rodoviária do Oeste (from Campo Grande Bus station). In all cases check the timetables beforehand.
The Tourist Information office in the arrivals hall of Lisbon airport will be able to provide detailed route and ticketing advice.
From the airport take the Aerobus Line 3
Tickets (EUR4 one way) can be bought on the bus Disembark as Sete Rios bus terminal.

Private transport
Airport taxis are always available at arrivals, but can turn quite expensive. Various rideshare options are available in Lisbon such as Uber and Bolt.
You may be able to book a private vehicle directly via your hotel or via Tripadvisor. Car Hire options are reasonably priced and readily available at Lisbon Airport, and will be useful for local transport during your visit to Peniche. However we do advise to book in advance.
